Slackware Current Update - FAIL!

Gee, where's Eric been all afternoon and evening? He's probably had his head buried in that Cisco text book, I'll bet. Well, you'd be wrong, capacitor breath. He was actually attempting to recover his main and laptop installations of Slackware after they crashed and burned from an update earlier today.

Weeeeeeeeee!

As some of you may know, I've been running Current since upgrading from 13.37 earlier last year. Sadly, an update that came out today (numerous updates/upgrades, actually) did not play well with my main nor my laptop systems. I was somehow able to recover the lappy, but the main was UGLY. I didn't update the shop system. It survived intact, but may get wiped anyway.

I had to wipe my / partition and recover from an rsync mirror. Ooopsy! Bad rsync backup. That didn't help much. You should always check your backups after you create them to make sure they are actually going to work if you should ever need them. Silly me. That bad backup was my fault. I did something stupid, but we won't go there.

Anywho, I decided to just wipe the / partition clean and reinstall Slack (stable); leaving the /home partition alone, of course. That went well. It's now after 0230hrs. I'm tired. I've customized, tweaked, installed, setup, etc. for the past 6 hours. I think I've got it mostly finished. I even took a pretty picture for you to see...

Yes. What you're seeing is no illusion. They are slinging snowballs down under... and I don't mean Australia. That really is KDE you're seeing there.

I'm going to bed now. Didn't get much studying done tonight. :(

Later...

P.S. Wonder how the lappy would like a nice new KDE installation? ;)

Eric, glad you are back up and running and your now current KDE setup looks great. Never good thing when you get totally blind sided by a OMG update. Either way, maybe it was the universes way of getting you to run KDE?

I'm still polishing and tweaking. I really like Dolphin (file manager), though. And for all the cool GUI tricks that KDE is doing on my system, it's really not eating up too much RAM or CPU cycles.

Well, I'm off to install some of my SlackBuild apps and find a decent sticky note app, too. The ones in KDE aren't quite what I want.

I think I'll leave the laptop and the shop systems alone for now. If the choke on an update or crash for some other reason, then I'll reinstall. Until then, status quo on those machines; running Current, Xfce and all.

Besides, settling on KDE for a primary WM/DE isn't a forgone conclusion just yet. I can easily switch over to Xfce with all my previous custom settings with just a click or two of the mouse.

OK, it's been close to 24 hours. I haven't had any issues with KDE at all. I'm still polishing the rough edges here and there. Having fun!

Now I really must go study. :(

I am amazed that kde has received rave reviews of late, and glad to hear it, too! It was not many moons ago that kde was on most people's shot-list. Kde was my fav until it crashed and burned with its infamous new-but-failed update.

Well KDE 4.10 was a major milestone with a ton of bug fixes and added features so it has gotten a lot better since the early 4.x releases

Can't wait for Wheezy to try it out.

Wheezy will have KDE 4.8. With all the fresh goodness reported in 4.10 I'm keen to try it. siduction and sid currently have 4.8.4, although siduction have ported lots of things back from 4.9. KDE 4.11 release schedule was just announced for mid-August.

I love KDE even though I switched when they screwed it up there for a while.

I used KDE4 from about 4.2, although it wasn't great till about 4.6. I think I hung on to KDE 3.10 for some time as well.

I too hung onto KDE 3.x for some time as well. I don't think I went back to KDE until Squeeze (KDE 4.4x?).

Well at least we will get closer to 4.10 with Wheezy. LOL!

Yeah, but Slack stable is running 4.8.5. :)

Ahem ... let me recommend again: Porteus 2.0 64b, frugal install. Bulletproof. Slack 14, kernel 3.7.8, KDE 4.9.5. If something does get borked then a simple delete of the current 'changes' file works exactly like a windows restore point. They even have a package manager that resolves dependencies. Slack was never before this easy.

I don't run Slackware because it's easy. :)

Porteus is outstanding, though. I have it on a thumb drive. It's handy for MANY things.

Sadly, my shop system choked on the Current updates today. I wiped and reinstalled 14 Stable, w/ Xfce, though. It's just easier to set up because all my Xfce configs are intact. I just have to install and configure wicd. I'll do that sometime later. There's no hurry. I've wasted too much darn study time playing with my 'puters the past couple days. :(

Also, I realized that my main and laptop systems had already been updated numerous times... 13.0 to 13.1 to 13.37 to 14 Current. That's a lot of upgrades. Clean installs are so much more... well, cleaner. The shop system had only been upgraded once, though. The lappy is still going. Once it crashes, I'll be reinstalling there, too.

One thing I'm remembering about KDE...

There were just so many ways to customize it and beautify it that it was almost overwhelming. I find myself getting side-tracked for hours just playing around with one feature or another. Early this AM, for example, I got off on a tangent of modifying/creating custom splash screens. I made three of them pretty quickly:

Slack_Files

Slack_Gold

Slack_Dragon

Yay! I'll be tweaking themes next. ;)

I should be studying. :(

Disabled the akonadi server in KDE today with no ill effects so far. Although, doing so definitely lightened the startup load.

Belay that modification to akonadi. I found that killing the service also hinders some features that I really like that are evidently dependent on it. Oh well... I have lots of RAM. May as well be using it for something, right? ;)
