Problem with Fonts in SuSE

http://webperf.org/msfonts/After I managed to get 3D Nvidia drivers working in SuSE 8.2 (it was a bit tricky, but not too bad following one website's advice), i get ugly textured fonts in all web browsers. Apparently, its a common problem in SuSE and its due to the fact it doesnt ship with MS TrueType fonts that are common on the web. The link above allows me to download an .RPM installation, but after i run it, it launches YaST installer, it looks like it installs (screen disappears too quick to receive confirmation) but i still dont have TrueType fonts listed, and cant seem to find it in ADD/REMOVE programs, so maybe it isnt installing correctly. Can someone with SuSE 8.2 try to install these MS true type fonts and let me know if it installs good? am i doing something wrong?thanx, folks... you all rock on this board :)

never mind, once again :) the normal .RPM doesnt install, but the one with "noarch" word in it installs. what is "noarch", by the way?

wham bam! thank ya mam! this site below helped perfectly. If you have SuSE with Nvidia (or other) and have ugly fonts, it can be fixed! woohoo! download the ms-fonts noarch .rpm and ms-fonts-style noarch.rpm and install both. this loads all popular truetype fonts from MS.next, go to this site:http://avi.alkalay.net/software/msfonts/it shows all settings recommended. only thing, enable anti-aliasing (they recommend against it, but they refer to older buggy version). Suse's anti-aliasing is flawless.i did all these changes and then restart KDE and VOILA, perfect beautiful fonts, even in Konqueror.only thing is in MOzilla, fonts are still a bit ugly. the fonts they recommend using on that site (microsoft-verdana-iso.... soomething) set in mozilla preferences doesnt show up in my mozilla, even though i have those fonts. i thinks its a mozilla problem, but no problem, i'm gonna google it and see.p.s. - i think this could help all linux distros, if you have blotchy ugly fonts in browsers or menus.

I don't have Nvidia but ATI and I did not have any problems with fonts from install until now in Suse. However, I made sure first time I did online update to check "Install Microsoft Core Fonts".I thinks the Suse is the only one who offeres them from their server. You might check it out.The only problem I had was antialiasing of fonts in Firebird but after finding XFT-enabled build everything was perfect.

B) I've got to change my avatar,Buddy I would so like to help you but I am in intensive search for best software to use myself. As you know I am still newbie in Linux waters. This is what I can tell you about it:XFT is technology used in Linux for fonts and their antialiasing. From what I understand it is patented technology and due to licensing issues in most distros it is not turned on by default. If you as a user enable it, it is ok.Suse comes with fully enabled antialiasing and as long as you use software that came with it, it is all gonna be nicely anti-aliased.if you install Mozilla build from Suse CD, it's all grant. However, you probably downloaded latest Mozilla yourself and that is the reason for fonts not anti aliased and also for not showing up in menu.I just read yesterday something about it.Apparently there is XFT-enabled build of Mozilla/Firebird that you can download, which is precompiled with XFT-enable flag.If you want to figure it out yourself, you can try compiling your own version from latest build.I am at work but either later or when I get home I'll get you links and such. Also, there is some little application that I can't remember for the name of god now the name that helps you build RPM's from source code and enters entries in your menus. What happens is when you build your own application that you download from internet, Suse doesn't know anything about it, therefore there is no entry in menu. This application somehow talk to your Suse and tells it that you installed new application, I guess Suse has something similar to Windows registry, which is called "Linker Cache".Sorry for the mixed up reply, as I am writing it from my memory, which is not that great :DFor the apps, I've read people are swearing by Quanta (did not try it) for web design,-I, myself amd perfectly happy with Mplayer for playing any type of video, although there is a catch as if you use Suse version of Mplayer, you won't be able to play Divx, or Quicktime or WMV or XVID, ...It's againg licensing stuff. What you have to do is download DIVX for Linux and install, then download source code for Mplayer, modify your configure file to include XVID, quicktime, etc. whatever you want to play (it's clearly explained in Readme or FAQ) and compile your own.I did not have any problems with Mplayer since I compiled it on my own. That's it for now, I am still in learning phase B)

Prelude...did anyone ever answer your "What's noarch" question? From what I've read, and I could be wrong, it means that this particular RPM is intended for any system architecture; i386, i686, etc. Kind of like an app that works on Windows 95 through XP. Other RPMs have to match your particular architecture.
