Hi JohannCould you check if "aumix" is installed ? . . . also check:

# ls -al /dev/dsp# ls -al /dev/sound

And the files that link to those two. Bruno

Aumix is installed but here's the range of errors :

Bruno I apologise I ran off to reinstall minislack since on the previous occassion I did a custom install. I never learn. Moral : When installing Slack and Slack based distros always always do a full install. Custom installs always lead to problems. Some other stuff to sort out though :1. I have a Lite-On Cdrom and Lite-On CDRW I need help setting them up correctly

johann@darkstar:~$ ls -l /dev/hdcbrw-rw-rw-  1 root cdrom 22, 0 2004-10-02 04:02 /dev/hdcjohann@darkstar:~$ ls -l /dev/cdromlrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 3 2004-10-02 04:02 /dev/cdrom -> hdd

/dev/cdrom actually points to the CDWriter not the CDRom I want to correctly set up the devices so /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdc the CDRom drive then I need to setup the CDRW links correctly.2.The install of Slack and Minislack don't detect the nvidia card instead the Vesa drivers are installed.

Johann,You may need to install the ide-cdrom module in order to get both CD-ROMs detected properly. Perhaps run
modprobe -dep

and see if it installs. Or try loading the driver itself with

insmod ide-cdrom

. Since you have a CD-RW you will need to make sure

ide-scsi

is also installed.

Hi JohanThis is the NOTE that Slackware posts for the scsi CD-RW's:

You can also pass the hdc=ide-scsi option on a bootdisk command line ( include in the appendline of lilo ). Once you do this, your CD-RW device will appear as a SCSI device (/dev/scd0) rather than an IDE device (/dev/hdc).  If this is the only CD-ROM type device in the machine (there's no DVD drive, for instance), then you'll probably also want to change your /dev/cdrom symbolic link to point to the new SCSI device instead of the old IDE device:   cd /dev   rm cdrom   ln -sf scd0 cdrom
After that if you want hdc to point to /dev/cdrom you need to adapt your fstab ( was hdd your writer ? ):D Bruno

Again late response I had to take an afternoon nap must be getting old. ;) Minslack uses the 2.6 kernel Bruno and Peachy so no need to pass the ide-scsi option.Just need to get the links pointing to the right devices.hdc -> cdrom and hdd -> cdwriter. Is it only the fstab I need to modify?

The 2.6 kernel ?? . . that is good !Yep only change the fstab . . ( and see to it that the correct directories are in /mnt ;) )After that "mount -a" should do but a reboot is betterB) Bruno

Ok Bruno a little more help req'd fstab currently looks like this:

dev/hda5        swap             swap        defaults         0   0/dev/hda9        /                ext3        defaults         1   1/dev/hda10       /home            ext3        defaults         1   2/dev/hda8        /mnt/data        vfat        auto,uid=johann  1   0/dev/cdrom       /mnt/cdrom       iso9660     noauto,owner,ro  0   0/dev/fd0         /mnt/floppy      auto        noauto,owner     0   0devpts           /dev/pts         devpts      gid=5,mode=620   0   0proc             /proc            proc        defaults         0   0

Only one device in there what am I changing exactly? ;)

Well according to your info a few posts back, /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/hdd so:

# mkdir /mnt/cdwriter

And these 2 lines in fstab:

/dev/cdrom       /mnt/cdwriter      iso9660     noauto,owner,ro  0   0/dev/hdc       /mnt/cdrom       iso9660     noauto,owner,ro  0   0

( First line can be /dev/hdd too ;) ):) Bruno

Minislack and Slackware both use the VESA driver instead of the NVIDIA driver. How do I correct this?

Hi Johann,Now, first: Have you got the NVidia drivers installed ??If you have . . . . . here is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file: ( Slackware ) copy over the relevant sections:Before you start: MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT FILE !!!! . . so you can put it back on the commandline if this fails.

Way ahead of you on this one everything there OK ;) Now on to the nvidia install. When you installed NVIDIA drivers did you get a message about kernel being compiled with fbdev and could cause problems with NVIDIA driver?

Yep . . the RIVA FB . . . no worries . . just ignore it !( Just don't let the installer download the kernel from Nvidia . . you have the correct one in /usr/src and it will find it )B) BrunoPS: What 2.6 kernel ???? There are problems with 2.6.8 !!! . . the solution is here on the forum . . http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...ndpost&p=106744

In that case see if Nvidia has the sources and let the installer download it from their site . . . if they do not have it you will have to find it at MiniSlack's site . . B) Bruno

Hi, For your information, I had some problems with Intel snd-intel8x0 driver , loaded as secondary mixer device (/dev/dsp1) in Minislack0.2To prevent this : rename or delete the snd-intel8x0m.ko module (modem) from /lib/modules/2.6.7-1/kernel/sound/pci/Then alsa will load snd-intel8x0 's mixer as /dev/dsp , and alsamixer will work without -c option.Note : this is really a problem only in KDERegardsJP
