WikiPad WP005 Tablet PC
  • NVIDIA Tegra Quad Core
  • 1GB RAM + 16GB Flash
  • 7" Touchscreen + Wifi
  • Bluetooth + Front Camera
  • Android (Jelly Bean)
http://www.ebuyer.co...tablet-pc-wp005

I did some research on this tablet and I gain the impression that it is quite  a reasonable speced tablet for £69.99. I was thinking that I could use it to surf the web with at me mums through her tv.
Would this give me a fairly decent surfing experience ?
I know it is not the latest and greatest so would not expect it to be blisteringly fast.

Any thoughts would be most welcome as i know nowt about tablets. :breakfast:

Well the biggest problem is that the tablet only has 1gb of ram and unless your gaming, the extra controls are useless.

Also, most places are selling it for $199 so that is a good deal and here is more detailed specs: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834754001

At that price, I would go for it regardless.

Well I was checking my bank account and I found a £50 pay in that I had forgotten was coming. It was a payback deal from my car  insurance that I took out back in early August.
So seeing as it is nearly Christmas I took the plunge and bought meself the Wikipad as a present along with a cheap deal class 10 16 GB ultra sd card.
I might do a review if me energy levels stay high.

Hello,

How would this compare with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7/Fire HD 6 models with UK pricing?  Or are you looking for a model specifically with the joystick/gaming pads built into it?

Well the Kindle 7 is around £119 and the Kindle 6 is around £79. I have a Amazon £10 voucher so I could have bought a Kindle 6 for the same price I paid for the Wikipad bot h prices include free shipping.

There is not a great deal between them in specs. The Kindle has a 1.5 Ghz cpu, 2 cores at 1.5 and 2 cores at 1.2, and the WP a 1.3 Ghz with 4 cores at 1.3, and a 5th single vSMP core that runs some programs very frugally.

WP = Nvidia says the Variable SMP architecture is completely OS transparent, which means that operating systems and applications don't need to be redesigned to take advantage of the fifth core.
So whether the chip is powering Android 4.0 or Windows 8, each OS will not need any code written into it.

an to be fair

K = Optimised to be fast and fluid by introducing new features including Touch Boost to automatically increase the performance of the CPU. FirePower with SmartSuspend learns when to turn off wireless connectivity and maximise standby battery life.

K = single band wi-fi,  WP = dual band wi-fi

K = 1280x800, no facts on resolution to monitor or tv  WP = 1280x800 and supports up to a 2,560 × 1,600 resolution

K = 8 GB hdd no expansion(yes you can get a 16 Gb but it costs more)   WP = 16 GB plus sd to 32 GB

K = one usb, you need an adapter to use it with a tv(will it work with all tvs ?)  WP = one usb and one HDMI

K = Accelerometer, gyroscope  WP = 3-axis Accelerometer,e-Compass,Gyroscope,GPS (including GLONASS)

K = two cameras   WP = one camera

K = video playback up to 720p   WP = Blu-Ray quality 1080p High Quality 40 Mbps

K = Dolby Digital Plus WP = HD 7.1 channel surround

K = Faster recharge time 6 to 7 hrs.    WP = 10 to 12 hrs but when using the gamepad extension you can charge whilst using the WP

The WP's controller comes of the tablet so you really get two machines for the price of one. Research suggests the controller is pretty good to use.
You can jailbreak the WP if you want to.

I personally would never ever buy any Kindle product which is one reason I bought a Nook as a e-reader. Similarly I would never ever buy a Apple.Just my way of thinking, if I buy something I like to be able to fiddle with it if I want.

:breakfast:

Hmmm seems I already have a start here for a decent review.

Whoope it arrived yesterday  Darn it you have to fully charge it before first use :angry2:  as it came partially charged it topped up really quickly  trouble is I spent so long playing testing it that it ran out of juice :'(

I must say the graphics are tremendous, you get a pin sharp image from whatever angle you look at it from. The couple of .mp4 vids I tried looked first class sharp edges super colours and they ran very well no lag and quick responses to stop start and seeking. It looks like the app I used to play the vids from keeps track of where you were in the movie when you close it down and restarts from that position when you open up the app again.

Well I have installed some apps.

Ivona text-to-speecg HQ, some voices, american, welsh and australian, along with some reading apps and a Flashlight.Typing this with my right pinky. Can not figure out the spell checker.

One good thing with this is that you can leave the console part plunged in on a side table and use it as charging dock.As the tablet is guided in by slots you get a no stress connection  which should make the mini USB last longer. The charger is a smart type and powers down when done.Never seen a charger like it,small neat and it came in two parts and I had to assemble before use. Geeky or what.

A lot of the chargers nowadays cut off after reaching 100% including laptop chargers. Otherwise the batteries would burn up quickly (I have a few old laptops with dead batteries because of this).

Well these blooming tablets do take up a lot of time.Moses did not seem to have a time problem.
Downloaded all sorts of apps,,,,,,,,,,,,, oooops,,,,,,,,,,,some neat useful ones though.

The screen seems to be permenantly covered in greasy fingerprints even though I have washed my hands and cleaned the screen several times. Also it reflects a lot of glare if there is a light source directly in front of it, though it does not affect the video quality, maybe in the very odd scene. With no direct light it works extremely well and you do not even notice the fingerprints.

BBC iPlayer tv and radio have no stutter or lag even on my broadband, you do have to give it a moment or two at start up.
VLC player works great and it found my videos on the sd card and plays files that the native player would not.
Moon+ Reader is very neat though it was a bit fiddly getting books of the sd card.
Tuneln Radio is not bad, good choice of some great radio stations, a bit hard to read what is playing and I could only get one show per station.Maybe I need to look at it again.
Feedly is super, I am going to use it as a RSS reader. have Linuxer and Arch latest news feeds already sloted in.

Sound output is loud enough to hear when the tablet is in the controller dock.Hardly loud enough to hear out of the controller but that may be the clips I was trying. The radio output was pretty hearable.
With a couple of bits of wood and some string I could make a neat stand for the tablet in the controller and that would be pretty niffty looking.

Unfortunately that glare may be an issue if you tried to use the tablet outside.

VLC is nice but it is in beta right now. MX Player(free) is an awesome video player for android

For PDFs, I use the Kindle app or ezPDF Reader(3.99)

TuneIn (free) is the best radio app for android hands down

The Arch Linux News (free) app is a great app for reading the latest news

Arch Wiki Viewer (free) is an excellent application for viewing the archwiki and is full featured

Yup I found that. I can also in most cases increase the font size by using two fingers and swiping away from each other, does not work in all apps though.

Have tried it out with my mums 32" tv as a monitor and it works great. No lag or anything works just the same as if it is not hooked up to the tv.The one game I tried out had good graphics and no lag, zombie hunting has never been so good.

You tube played great and web surfing was also good. The tv resolution is 720 so a bit of the screen is cut of as the tablet puts out a 1080p resolution. When I get time I will see if I can correct this.

I like my bluetooth keyboard. Plus, the case for the keyboard serves as a stand for a tablet or a phone. (You pull out something for the phone.

the red cable is only in to charge the keyboard when I first got it. I haven't had to recharge it yet.

Neat trick with the case as a stand. Looks like a neat keyboard. If I start to use the Wikipad a lot I may go for one.At the moment I am surfing via voice commands for the searching part. :breakfast:
