nvidia-340xx and nvidia

2014-10-05 - Sven-Hendrik Haase

As NVIDIA dropped support for G8x, G9x, and GT2xx GPUs with the release of 343.22, there now is set of nvidia-340xx packages supporting those older GPUs. 340xx will receive support until the end of 2019 according to NVIDIA.

Users of older GPUs should consider switching to nvidia-340xx. The nvidia-343.22 and nvidia-340xx-340.46 packages will be in testing for a few days.

I wonder how that translates for me personally, in terms of which old legacy AGP cards will still work under Linux? I have some pretty old ones here and there...

Well I did a bit of research and it seems like the kernel still supports AGP (3.17 included). As far as nvidia and ati are concerned, I am not for sure so you may have to use the floss drivers

That's nice to know, Josh. Well, I'm gradually upgrading video cards anyway, as Betty and I both dislike when card games display jerky card motion when dragging them. Usually I have found the video card to be the weak link in that situation, rather than the CPU or low installed memory.

With the really old video your only chance may be to use the open source drivers. Nouveau seems to work pretty well with the NV 8000 series and older. I've had troublw with the GT4XX and 5XX series using Nouveau. The AMD Radeon driver is also pretty good with legacy cards and also with trailing edge stuff like the AMD 6XXX and 7XXX series of GPUs.

I think with AGP you can't go much higher than NV 6200 which definitely would be a legacy situation.
