securitybreach
Repost from G+: So I am having an issue and its been raking my brain. One of my 2tb media drives (WD Green sata6) was transferring files really slow and then the fsck (filesystem check) was failing at boot (could of been a user mistake -- messing with hdparm). Anyway, so I removed the entry from fstab and then mounted it normally and moved 1.7tb of data off of it. Then I reformatted the drive (ext4) and copied a file to it. Well it was taking like 5 minutes to move a 1.5gb file to the drive which is very abnormal. The machine has a quad core AMD processor with 24gb of ram so it should be fast even though the drive is just a sata6 drive. Normally, you can tell when a drive is failing due to I/O read/write issues and such but this drive isn't really giving any errors, just really slow. Any ideas? Does it sound as though the drive is failing? And if so, does anyone know of a good 4gb sata6 drive that is around a hundred bucks? I was looking at this one http://www.amazon.co...0/dp/B00B99JU4S even though I normally only use WD Caviar black drives for my media (this is the only WD Green in my system). It really sux as I am pretty broke this time of year but I do have a credit card to charge to. Thanks Also, I ran the S.M.A.R.T test and this is the results: smartctl -c /dev/sdc http://ix.io/mNV I also ran e2fsck against is and it fixed some blocks but no errors in the end. V.T. Eric Layton
It doesn't sound as though your drive is failing. It sounds more like you have a transfer issue; possibly a bad SATA controller on the mobo. Before we panic, though, you should probably run a defrag on that drive. Yeah... it's true that Linux file systems don't gum up quite as bad or as fast as Windows file systems, but it does occur. Give this a try... https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/linux-filesystem-defrag/
V.T. Eric Layton
Oh, and double check your hdparm settings. An incorrect hardware tweak can definitely slow down a drive.
securitybreach
Would a freshly formatted drive need to be defragged though? Also, the motherboard is less than 3 months old so I doubt the sata controller went out.
