Makes me feel a little ashamed of complaining--I don't have it nearly that bad. But I am REALLY tired of the seemingly endless cold (wind chills forecast to be -23 C or colder tonight) and ice (the worst, and we've got more freezing rain on the way in a couple of days).

I left the lovely frozen north years ago for a reason.

I have only been back in the winter a few times, and only because my job paid me huge sums of cash to go.

Otherwise, you folks up there have beautiful scenery and weather in the summer.

It's not that bad here on Cape Breton Island. Instead of having just snow we are getting a lot of wet snow, freezing rain and rain this year.

I'd almost rather have the snow. The freezing rain is killing me--I just started trying to take off a layer of ice from the driveway outside my garage (back of the house--faces northeast--little melting) for like the fifth time this month. I was trying to get it off before the temps go back down tomorrow, but when I take off the thin snow layer that fell over it last night to try to get to the ice, I think I just make things worse.

We just had snow showers today; no accumulation.

But this February is the coldest on record. Now I'm trying to find out what year in the 1800's records started to be kept.

The other morning a record from 1914 was shattered by 8 degrees.

Not moved . Still here in IE. Heavy cloud most of the day today . but had to let the fire go out. I peeled a layer off but still a tad warm .

Wiring done . All spaghetti tidied up and everything works just fine . No leaks or shorts .

Case fan coming on for the first time this year .

 

We belong to the multiskilled generation . The next generation will definately need robots to do the work for them . All playstation does not a clever chappie make :hysterical:

Hello March!

This is partly through the 9" (22.9cm) snow we got on top of yesterday's sleet and snow.

Tonight it will be 2° F (-17° C).

Our February was horrid in terms of cold; it broke all kinds of records.

I feel your pain Liz. We were hit pretty hard too. The man who clears my driveway was nice enough to shovel paths to both my bird feeding stations--otherwise I'm not sure how I'd get up over the piled snow to get to the feeders! Good thing I moved both feeding stations in closer to the driveway last fall.

Well Elizabeth it looks like better weather is coming starting Sunday. We might finally reach normal temps after two months of below average temps.

Except now all that snow is going to MELT--I guess I'll find out how good the work is that I had done in my basement last summer. The jack hammering for the new french drain was indescribable--we probably should have left the house while they were doing that part of it.

Well at the least you folks have much less expense on the heating oil/gas. There would have been more casualties if the oil was still at last years prices.

On the down side my wood burner has almost chocked the flue with tar. Had to get up on the roof today and push the rods down so I could then go inside and pull them through . All in a mighty gale of wind .

This summer I will fabricate a 6in flue to replace the 4.1/2 in one I made last year. Definately cut the lobsterback bends to a much steeper angle. 30/20 deg. at least.

 

I hope the wx over there improves and yall get some relief from that perishing cold.

Haven't a clue what a lobsterback bend is but realize it must have to do with your chimney. You too need to stay safe as you clean your chimney (I do know what rods are due to some off-beat reading of old British mysteries).

 

On the bright side, our temperatures go steadily up from tomorrow through next Thursday--that's as far as the forecasters are willing to go into the future.

It's cold down here in the deep south for this time of year also. 28F here at the house this A.M., and hit 27F yesterday morning.

 

Yesterday we had low temp records broken or matched at numerous NWS offices in the area.

Lobsterback :- How to make..Take a straight length of pipe and make a line straight along it's length. now if you cut it across at 45deg and turn one section through 90deg and weld them together .Bingo there is a 90deg turn on the pipe . This is a one step bend. By cutting say 4 times at 11.25degrees you get still a 90 but with three sections on the bend . This is a lobsterback , Looks like the back of a lobster or shrimp. We used to make all our own bends on the pipelines this way and could make them as easy or sharp as needed.

 

My situation means that I have to go out through the side wall and then "weather" it to stop rain running through the wall and soaking the floor around the stove.

I have a twin walled steel chimney for my burner and every now and again I pop a few lengths of thin lath soaked in diesel down the chimney and then light a fire. Burns the chimney clean in no time. best done on a dark night as you get a fab firework display from the burning soot as it soars upwards.
