anyone in the forum running Linux with AMD Ryzen CPU's

I am running Linux on my new machine AMD Ryzen 2200G cpu. Lots of problems with mint 19 linux freezes sometimes and takes up to 5 minutes to boot. Not all of the time. Like debian stretch the kernel is not up to date to handle the Vega graphics in the chip. I don't have this problem running Siduction QT 3.0 or windows 10. The devs need to get on the stick and support this newer hardware for those of us without a graphics card. Who else is running the ryzen cpu's in the forum?

Guess I will have to wait for Linux (Mint and stretch) to catch up.

Yes, I do. My 2700X works flawlessly on Archlinux.

Probably because you are not using a cpu with vega graphics, and you are running with a graphics card. Mine would probably run flawlessly too if I had a graphics card. It does run perfect with windows 10 and siduction.

Perhaps, but my first thoughts go to the distros themselves...Siduction and Arch typically have the latest & greatest cutting edge software, including kernels. Debian and Mint...not so much. Good news is....newer kernels in cutting edge distros apparently support Ryzen/Vega just fine. Just a matter of time before those kernels filter down into "more stable" distros. Bad news is...Debian will probably be the last distro to receive it?! LOL!

I agree with what you say, but if siduction has a bad upgrade that I can't recover from well... I had that happen a couple of years ago and stopped using it for that reason. To many problems for me to try and install arch. Maybe Manjaro. I just hope that Clem will get on the ball and fix Mint and use a newer kernel. Siduction uses 4.19.4 while mint is still using 4.15.39 Oh well I can always use Win 10 but I don't like to. I only keep it because of my Garmin GPS and updates.

Update I reinstalled Mint 19 cinnamon formatting root and swap. keeping home so I would not lose all my customizations. before it was taking two minutes or more to boot up. it is now taking 12 seconds. did not do anything other than reinstall and got the updates with kernel 15.0.39 I will be happy if it stays this way without freeze ups and stability issues. will keep forum posted.

Ah AMD on Linux - good news and bad news.

The good news is that when it works, AMD graphics on Linux is quite a beautiful thing. Open source, uses the Linux graphics stack, runs great.

The bad news is that AMD always gets its act together on Windows first. Even with the latest kernel and graphics elements, AMD on the newest hardware can go from buggy to non-functional. With the older kernels such as we get in Debian it can be an exercise in futility.

That is why I was interested in how Mel was making out with his Ryzen APU. I tend to hang back a year on AMD stuff before I try to run Linux on it.

Forum members may remember the problems I had with an R7 360 video card a while ago. The latest kernels wouldn't support AMD's proprietary driver, but for some reason the video ID number wasn't present in them - so the FOSS graphics stack didn't recognize it. It took until kernel 4.6 or so for AMD to sort this out. I ran LM 17 for a long while with kernel 3.13 so that I could use the proprietary driver.

AMD - short-term pain, long-term gain - hopefully.

Hello Raymac

I got it working good so far. I think that on my original install the ( / ) partition got corrupted or else the swap partition. not sure which. When I did the reinstall I formatted the root and the swap partitions, but not home. Right after the install I updated and it installed a newer kernel 4.15.39 and It is working great so far and is fast. Boots in 12 seconds from grub prompt. a lot better than the 2 minutes plus before. Mint xfce is 3 seconds faster than cinnamon. am trying other distros Manjaro and Deepin. will keep the forum posted on what I find.

When I had trouble with the AMD graphics driver, I did not get a slow boot. I got no GUI at all, just a black screen and a couple of lines of cryptic text. I'm glad it's working for you.

I just ran across this:

Up until Linux 4.18 I experienced lots of total lockups while booting (like 5 or more attempts needed), but when it finished everything worked fine. No more problems after upgrading to 4.19.

Yep I've tried several kernels using UKUU all the way up to 4.19.6 mainline (Ubuntu mainline) all seemed to work with Mint OK. at the present I'm using 4.15.39 with no problems except I did have a freeze a couple of days ago, but a reboot solved it with no damage done. I've tried several distro's with my new setup and several never get past the boot up. The fastest distro with no problems has been Siduction QT 3.0 and latest Manjaro.
