Installing google-earth in Ubuntu 16.04

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

It has been quite a while since I have asked a question but I do read most of the posts.

I have upgraded Ubuntu to 16.04 and it is working fine except that I cannot install or find google-earth which I need for a course I am taking on Permaculture.

I can go to Synaptic and install the google-earth package but it doesn't show anywhere. So I tried 'apt-get install' and I get the following;

rejean@rejean-G41MT-S2PT:~$ sudo apt-get install google-earth stable
[sudo] password for rejean:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package google-earth
E: Unable to locate package stable
rejean@rejean-G41MT-S2PT:~$

Could someone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

Your missing the dash between earth and stable. It should be

apt-get install google-earth-stable

And if its not in the ubuntu repos, follow this: https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/how-to-install-google-earth-on-ubuntu-16-04/5268

Oop for 16.04: https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/how-to-install-google-earth-on-ubuntu-16-04/5268

Tried with the dash still the same. Then tried your link (which I had tried several times but forgot to mention). then I tried the 3 packages mentioned but:

Thanks for the help Josh! I tried installing google-earth on another machine which runs Ubuntu 15.... and it did but the video card is too small, poor so it doesn't work. So I went back to my main machine and installed it into Mageia 5.0 and it is working so whenever I want to work on my course I'll have to switch distro, no big deal, but definitely a pain, waste of time.

Anyway thanks again!

rejean,

I've never used google earth, and I'm not on Ubuntu 16.04 yet, but I looked at the links SB posted and followed along with your posts of failure. Something that jumps out at me is that the instructions for installation in 16.04 require installation of 3 packages from 15.10 (wily). Change your repos in the software center by editing your "main" ubuntu repo, changing from xenial to wily. then download the 3 packages, and install deb file. verify everything is working as expected, but then remember to edit your main ubuntu repo back to xenial.

hope this helps ya!

It almost worked. I managed to follow the instructions and install everything until the time to install Google-Earth arrived:

rejean@rejean-G41MT-S2PT:~/lsb$ sudo dpkg -i google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb
dpkg: error processing archive google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb
rejean@rejean-G41MT-S2PT:~/lsb$

Yeah! It worked. I uninstalled the download, downloaded it again and this time it installed properly. Thanks Hedon and Josh. Now I am a happy fellow.

Glad you got it working rejean, but after all your hard work, I saw a posted solution earlier today on the NoobsLab website. Posted for anyone else who may encounter this issue:

http://www.noobslab.com/2016/05/google-earth-for-ubuntulinux-mint-easy.html

I find useful stuff for Ubuntu users on that site occasionally (and sometimes it applies to other distros also), and I can vouch that I've never had an issue with any binary, script, or PPA from that site. For anyone else who might experience the same issue as rejean, Ubuntu 16.04 is missing a dependency for Google Earth:

The dependency lsb-core is missing from 16.04 Xenial repositories, so I created a simple script for installation in any Ubuntu/Linux Mint and for 16.04 it will pull lsb-core from Ubuntu Wily repositories.

The NoobsLab script should make Google Earth an easy and painless installation on Ubuntu and 'Buntu derivatatives (perhaps even Debian derivaties?). IMO, this is MUCH easier than editing your software sources from "Xenial" to "Wily" repos, downloading & installing Google Earth, then restoring your repos from Wily back to Xenial.

I had never heard of that site before but it did remind of a quote from Bruno:

We try to avoid the word "newbie", it does no justice to the efforts we, also the beginners, put in to learn a new operating system. I think the wish to learn Linux shows a brave attitude and deserves a better qualification. --Bruno

maybe I'm just a strange bird, but I find no offense in the word newbie. in my eyes, "newbie" just means "a beginner...brave enough to try something new; inexperienced enough to start near the beginning; but determined to move beyond that first run". Personally, I think it has a positive connotation, unless you started as "a beginner", but never progressed beyond that point....you just stayed there. I often refer to myself as a "newbie" when jumping into a new pond...like Arch or Archbang. It's my way of saying "I don't know much....YET...but I'm working on that!" JMO...

Well back then it was more of a derogatory statement and it still is in gaming environments. To be called a n00b is an insult in a lot of areas.

I always wondered why the word was cast that way, as I could never see it in any way except a positive light. Funny how things evolve...

I saw a meme not too long ago that sums up my views perfectly...can't find it today...but it goes like this: Winning may be the ultimate goal, but if you can't win, finish; if you can't finish, at least try; and be proud that trying always trumps "didn't even bother". I like that...it reminds me of another quote to the effect "the best you can do in any crisis situation is the right thing; the second best outcome you can hope for is the wrong thing; the worst thing you can do is NOTHING!" JMO...
