sunrat Posted August 24, 2016 Share Posted August 24, 2016 I felt a bit guilty about replacing my 8-year old Core2Duo E8500 system as it is still working perfectly, but it wouldn't run Rise Of The Tomb Raider or even GTA V so what else could I do? I installed Win10 (painful) and about 5 Linuxii so far, with KDE Neon installed last night looking to be a keeper until a real Debian-based Plasma5 distro is released (siduction due soon). Neon is KDE's showcase distro for Plasma5 and currently has version 5.7.3. It is progressing in leaps and bounds and is extremely impressive, although some programs I like have yet to be ported up from KDE4 which is a minor issue as they still run perfectly but just require some KDE4 libs. I was getting along well with MX-15 Xfce which is a great distro, but some minor niggles just aren't present in Plasma5 particularly the support for HiDPI screens like my 4k monitor. Been auditioning too many distros so far so gaming on Win has only been install and a quick play of ProjectCARS which looked amazing and ran smoothly. My current Frankenputer (assembled from parts off dead computers dug up in the dead of night from the computer graveyard in my shop) is still chugging along. Parts and other extraneous matter occasionally fall off and go tinkling across the floor, but it still boots that ol' Slackware every time I hit that ON switch. Reminds me of the 'open' no box special use computers Jim would throw together on the spur of the moment. One he ended up putting in a foil wrapped cardboard box and putting on the screen porch running old Redhat 6 and a chat client to talk with our online friends from the porch in the cool of the evening. He used a 5" paper white monitor for the text based commandline system. Of course that was back to the first 10 years after we first moved to our house here in the boonies ON DIAL UP shared networking via a Linux based router. Life has changed much after Lyme Disease struck Jim and irreversably changed after my wonderful genius passed away. But I will always have the awesome memories. Neon was looking great but my local TV station streaming service, ABC iView, wouldn't play properly in Chrome (doesn't work in other browsers). Video would start then freeze while audio continued! I went back into Neon to see if I could fix it and it wasn't broken! Have been using Neon for a couple of days and watched a few hours of iView programs without problems. I guess it was just my dodgy ADSL internet playing up again. Usually sits on 8Mb/s but sometimes drops to about 1Mb/s which usually returns to normal after a router reboot. On another note, Neon now has another distro based on it, Maui Linux, which is a desktop distro from the Netrunner people. Netrunner itself is now focused on portable devices. Funny, though, I was SOOOOOOO thrilled when I went from 56K dial-up to 3M DSL. Ah... those were the daze. I'm spoiled now with my 50M/50M FIOS. They always show up some puzzling and surprising results like these below.
