How do I "Really" install Firebird?

I have been using MozFB (V0.61) for a while! I have it customized for most everything that I need from it (that I am aware of)! But I do have one minor problem with it that I can't seem to figure out: *I had downloaded the *.zip version for Win32. *Upon unzipping, I moved the whole folder to my (equivalent of) ProgramFiles directory! *To use it, I simply click on a shortcut that points to the MozillaFirebird.exe! The problem is that since I have not "INSTALLED" this program, it is not a registered program under WinXP!How does one REALLY install MozFB, so that the WinXP Registry becomes MozFB aware?I have gone to great pains to figure this out but still no resolution in site (ahem>> "sight")!!

Moved! :DBy registered program, what exactly do you mean? There's a checkbox in Tools -> Options that allows you to set it as your default browser, and that's really all it takes.

Firebird does not require any registry entries. It is beautiful. Simple, complete without any need to muck up your settings. Doesn't matter what operating system you are using, it still just works by clicking on it. Add the shortcut to your menu and you are set to go. I like that feature! There are no registry entries for it.

When I attempt to install the FlashPlayer Plug-in for Mozilla and after the download of the FlashPlayer >> next dialog asks (by FlashPlayer) which program I want to install the plug-in for >> The selection area (for selecting the application) is empty! Thus, I have never been successful in installing the FlashPlayer for MozillaFireBird in WinXP! When I "must" view a flash site, I am always forced to go to IE6 (eeeeeeeyew)! This would not have bothered me so much, but a neighbor (using Win2000) is having the same exact problem!Surprise, Surprise! Originally, I was just calling this a nuisance but now that I have witnessed someone else having the same exact problem, I had to surmise that this was due to an unregistered program!Yes yes, I was forced to install the "Stand Alone" version of the FlashPlayer as a work-around to this problem (about a month ago) but now that I notice someone else is having this same exact problem, I am at a total loss for this weird behavior of FlashPlayer/MozFB!I have posed the problem to TechSupport at MacroMedia and I have querried Google forums but .............................![FlashPlayer 7 has been released]

You should (during the flashplayer install) choose "other browser" and then browse to Firebird's folder and have it install to the "plugins" folder... It's always worked for me

Thank you for the reply GolfProRM:

You should (during the flashplayer install) choose "other browser"
This was the reason that I had initially asked about "registering" the program!I have actually attempted this but when I go to the directory, the mozilla.exe does NOT show up!Hey quint, thank you for the link to the installer package and that was EXACTLY what I was looking for and it worked!EUREKA! :) :) Since my initial download of MozFB was the zip file and (as initially stated) upon unzipping/relocating the unzipped package >> the program was not "registered"! But using your link with the installer package cured it all! Now my >>ControlPanel>>Add/RemovePrograms shows Mozilla as a registered product!I went to the MacroMedia FlashPlayer site and was successfully able to install it for MOZILLA, as the dialogue NOW recognized my installation of the Mozilla!Thank you all for your help and all of you are back in my will!

I thought maybe this would solve my problem (Firebird freezes on 2K), yet IE and kmeleon work fine.I erased the zipped versions of .6.0 and .6.1 and all the files created when they were unzipped. I downloaded the exe file for .6.1 and installed it. Still the same. I connect to the internet, click the Firebird shortcut (the first time I do it, it says resolving mozilla.org in the status line) and then it does nothing. I get tired of watching no action in my ISP status and click the x to close the browser and I get a popup that says - this program is not responding. If anyone has any ideas throw them my way.

Thanks. I did that. When launched it asked about a profile so I gave it a name besides default. The program crashed and I allowed it to send a report. I'm not sure if it found any helpful info to send because I can't get a thing to display other than a white screen and then a freeze and a crash.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was looking thru the available "Active Projects" for MozFB/MozTB at http://www.mozdev.org/projects/active.html and I came across this item that may be of interest to others! I am including it here as it is exactly what I was in search of before Quint provided me with what I needed! "Unofficial Installers for Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird" by William Ng ( http://birdsinstaller.mozdev.org/ ) IntroductionThis page offers Win32 unoffiical installers for Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird. I modified the scripts from seb and create the installers with NSIS. The installers are further compressed with 7-Zip. As a result, the sizes of the installers are very small. On this page, you can download the installers for Mozilla Firebird and Thunderbird.FeaturesSince these installers are based on seb's versions, they have similar features such as: * User-friendly installer and uninstaller. * For Mozilla Firebird, writes correct registry values to support Macromedia Shockwave, Macromedia Flash (screenshot), JRE v 1.4.2_01, RealOne Player and Windows Media Player 9 (as described in the Mozilla Firebird Plug-in FAQ). * Adds shortcut for Profile Manager in Start Menu. * You can type "MozillaFirebird" and "thunderbird" to launch Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird from Start Menu -> Run.I hope this comes in handy for others and I guess I really was not off of my rocker initially for searching for such a tool! :w00t:

just a thought, but let's not hark on Firerbird for not registering itself, or not having an installer. it is still at 0.6 pre-alpha level. i for one am glad they dont have any install/uninstall and registry changes, especially if you're deleting and loading up new builds almost daily.once firebird matures and becomes the new and improved Mozilla Browser, it will have an installer, and plug-ins for flash will be as easy as in netscape. as an alternative, you could load the TTOL extension, "Things They Left Out", which adds a MORE OPTIONS area under tools, and in TTOL:MIME TYPES, you will find "Always use Netscape plugin finder to get plugins". that way, if you're missing a particular plugin, it should take u to the plugin page right away. i think. i dunno, i didnt try it, my flash always worked. :w00t:

I may have been barking but definitely was not "HARKING"!As you can see the original post here, I have had difficulties installing some extensions (Flash Player) due to this and I had thought that it would have been a service to others by posting my FYI comment of 09/26/03!It was not a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa in any sense of the word!

speaking of Firebird, GolfproRM, what's latest build you recommend? still on 08-17 one? I had many issues with late august/early september builds, but i'm using 09-18 build at home and the 09-23 build at work, and both work FAN-Tastic :w00t:

mozdev.org's plugindoc pages are a goldmine of info on installing Firebird plugins. For many including Flash and Shockwave, it's easiest to download and install the reg file on that page, which makes the reg key the installers are looking for.Make sure you have the Netscape installer (for Flash)as the IE one wont work. Also check the Firebird FAQ and Extensions pages.Extensions allow you to make the browser just how you want it. I love mouse gestures. :o
