firefox crash and messed up fonts

Hello,

I am having trouble with Firefox. For some reason, firefox crashed and after a couple of restarts all my font settings are changed. I have tried reinstalling to no use. I looked up the profiles folder and they seem to have some old and new data (although i am not sure what exactly i was trying to find out there?!).

I do have an Old Firefox Data folder on my desktop. Since I don't remember what exactly the settings where, I am unable to change the font settings all over again. Is there any way I can get back my old settings from this folder that has appeared suddenly on the desktop?

Some bookmarked pages open with smaller texts and some bigger and google page in tiny fonts. weird

Can someone please help me to get back my deafult settings back?

Thank you.

You said you tried reinstalling, did you totally uninstall first? That's what I would do; uninstall, reboot, then install anew. Not sure what that would do with your old settings - I suspect they would all be lost.

FTR, many have gotten tired of FF problems and frequent security issues with FF and have switched to the FF derivative, Pale Moon. I never switched to FireFox as my default, instead sticking with IE. But for the last couple months, I have been using Pale Moon as my default browser. If you like FF but are ready to try something else, you might want to give PM a try.

Is the text size the only problem?

If so, try pressing "Ctrl 0" (hold down the Ctrl key and press the zero key) to get the Firefox default.

If you are slightly sight impaired, you can then press "Ctrl +" on any pages that need larger type (or "Ctrl -" for smaller type).

I have exactly 1 item in the font folder (this is 32 bit FF ESR)

EmojiOneMozilla.ttf size 1,199kb

I checked XP too and I can't find a font folder.

Hmm...I uninstalled, and installed without rebooting.. IE was slower so switched to FF and never looked back since. ALthough, I suspect FF is a resource hog clocking up so much RAM. I use it mainly cos its lighter and customizable. Guess its time for a rethink.

I lost my add-ons as well. But yeah, text sizing and fonts are an issue cos spending longer periods on the comp, i dont want to strain my eyes too much.

I do use the function keys you mention. But its tedious when I have to do the same everytime I start the browser as the changes I make in the settings folder arent getting saved.

Anyway, thank you for your responses. I guess Ill try another time and see if I just need to switch to PM

Hi, Bhavana...

I wish I could tell you of some miraculous way to revert to your previous setup in FF, but if you uninstalled/reinstalled and possibly already had a corrupted (for some unknown reason) profile, then all is probably unrecoverable.

The best thing you can do is to completely delete your Profile folder and restart your newly reinstalled FF. This will automagically create a new profile folder for you. The bad news is that it is a stock/default profile and you'll have to set your FF up back the way you had it originally. It may take you some time, but the good news is you'll be starting with a clean, un-corrupted profile.

I know folks hate hearing this, but BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP! When folks like me have browsers that are heavily customized with addons, plugins, manual coding tweaks, etc. It is VERY important to copy that profile folder to a safe storage spot on your system on a regular basis. Mine gets backed up every Sunday, so the most I could lose is 6 days worth of data. For a browser profile, that would be very little... mostly cookies, logons, etc. However, if I had an instance where my profile folder became corrupted for some reason or another (it happens), I would have at most a one week old profile safely stashed away to utilize. It only takes a few seconds to Right Click + Copy --> Paste to save that profile folder.

Anyway, enough of my backing-up spiel for now... ;)

A quick way to improve readability in FF is the READER VIEW accesed by clicking the little open book icon in the url bar.

Firefox was updated yesterday to v 55. None of the old addons work. That might be why you lost everything.

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/08/07/firefox-55-0-find-out-what-is-new/

You can't "rollback" to a previous version.

If you want to fix this, you have 3 options: download and install the older version and turn off auto updating (not recommended because it would be a security risk) or switch to FF ESR which is patched and the old addons will work until June 26 20178 or try Waterfox, a 64 bit only browser that is based on FF and the old addons.

1. old v54 https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/54.0b9/

2. ESR current version (8/8/17) 52.3 https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

3. Waterfox https://www.waterfoxproject.org/downloads

I updated yesterday Version 55.0 (64 bit) ... Regarding add-ons:

  • My Extensions are all flagged with a yellow marker containing the word "Legacy", I wondered what that means, but so far, they all appear to be working.
  • My Plugins aren't flagged, and also appear to be working.

I'm using the default "appearance" and don't have any "services" installed.

I have a ways to go before worrying about my addons tanking. Slackware 14.1 stable main system is still running FF 45.9.0

ESR. My Slack 14.2 stable office and shop systems are running FF 52.2.0 ESR.

Heh! Sadly, I'm quite familiar with those sentiments. Computers can have that effect on folks occasionally. :smashcomp:

Sadly, even with the same profile folder, I have had to re-do my FF fonts and sizes when I do a new linux install. I keep my old /home so I have all add-ons, bookmarks, etc., but font and color settings vanish.
