outlook express ?????

Recommended Posts

B) <_< What is the cause and the cure for this annoying problem. When I click on the mail icon on my home page it gives me a window that says "Outlook Express" in the upper right corner and is basically an error/warning that tells me that "a dial up networking connection is already established and I have the following two choices either I select .. try to locate the server on the current connection or .. hang up and dial access4free .. when I close the window I get another error/warning window that tells me that an error has occured while trying to dial into the email section. The OS in use is XP Pro ... I am pretty sure this is an easy fix in OE but not sure how to do it .. also if I select the first option above then it will give me all my emails that are somewhere off in cyber land ... any suggestions/comments :)

You might try looking at Internet Explorer options since Outlook Express gets it's internet connection options from Internet Explorer's settings.Suggest you try the following:Tools | Options (or Internet Options) | Connections Tab and make sure the setting regarding Dialup Networking and Virtual Private Network settings radio button is checked for either "Never dial a connection" (if you always connect on your own first before opening an Internet application), or "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" (then it will only try to dial if you don't have a current connection going).Hope this helps.

James/LilBambi...James, yes the problem still exists and now it has brought along a friend too.More on that in a minute or two....LilBambi. checked the connnections tab under IE and the only item that is checked is the one that says ... "always dial my default connection" (the last one on the list of 3). The two you mentioned are not checked..Now back to the "friend".... over the past 4 days this has developed and it is a cause of concern for me in that it might be a warning of an impending Windows XP crash (hope not)... anyway for some unknown reason sometimes at boot and sometimes after I am already connected to the web the window to dial the web connection will pop up for no reason that I know of or it pops up and I either cancel or close it and it pops up again and again as many as 3 times that I have counted. This has all happened since I have moved at the beginning of the month. It has not been good. A little backround ... after the move had to get a phone line run for the obvious reasons (phone/web :pirate: ), well .. could not connect to the web using my normal ISP but I could using NetZero and Juno. Fussed at my ISP (Access4Free) for several days about it, did not get any useful or informative information. The good side is that during the new phone line installation, the phone company blew the whole installation out the door. New tech comes out and fixed that and my web problem to my ISP (turns out that there was an extra 6500 feet of unused/needed line on my line) .. so now I have my ISP back (only for awhile) and the problems I mentioned .. and I also believe that some of the info my ISP gave me is the cause of all of this mess. .. just don't know how to fix it or where to start either.... B)

How many "connections" do you actually have, Dale? When you look in My Network Connections>View Network Connections, how many 'connectoids' do you see?It sounds to me like you have a few and XP is confused, so to speak. I would be tempted to delete the lot and create a new connection.

James ...Well .. at one time I had 3 the one I pay for (access4free) and two 10 hours free for back up .. NetZero and Juno ... but the only ones that had the capability of sending and receiving mail through OE were access4free and NetZero and I had no problems. Juno was a web mail setup. That setup worked for months. After the move and everything went down the tube my ISP access4free suggested that I substitute there phone numbers in the dialer windo for NetZero and try that. I did and got the same results that I was getting trying access4free (white noise as we referred to it in the Navy) but the downside of that change was that I could not get the NetZero to work any longer .. so downloaded NetZero again and installed it and it is seems to work fine. Tried this test on Juno and now Juno is no more, can't d/l it get a "installer file is corrupted" error. So needless to say I only have the two and an ISP that is surely testing my patience to the far depts of the cyber world. B) :pirate:

LilBambi. checked the connnections tab under IE and the only item that is checked is the one that  says  ... "always dial my default connection" (the last one on the list of 3). The two you mentioned are not checked..
longgone,You will need to UNCHECK "always dial my default connection" ... if that is checked it WILL very often redial your default connection (even if you are already connected!) when programs try to access the Internet like Outlook Express (which means everytime it checks the mail). This is because many programs depend on the settings in Internet Explorer for instruction on how to access the Internet and it WILL ask you the very question you are saying it is asking...and OutlookExpress definitely does check Internet Explorer for it's instructions on how to get to the Internet and follows it religiously! And that would make the computer appear almost haunted. The setting in Internet Explorer Tools, Options needs to be set for either of the two that I mentioned in my earlier post for OutlookExpress to make use of an existing connection. When I used to dial in on dialup on my Windows computer directly, I always set it to 'never dial a connection' and then set the LAN settings button 'to detect proxies.' Then I would dial up manually before I used any programs that needed Internet. By doing this, NOTHING could get out to the Internet unless I dialed in.But either one of the ones I mentioned in my earlier post should do the trick for you.And James is right ... I would definitely check for any errant Dialup Networking connections that don't match any of your current ISPs. You could have what is called a deviant "Dialer" program installed on your computer that could be compounding the problem. These deviant "Dialer" programs create Dialup Networking connections, in addition to your ISP in Dialup Networking and can make calls to long distance 900 numbers and charge your phone bill for bogus phone charges. I would definitely check for any that might be there.Glad the phone company fixed the wiring issues.

I agree with Fran. It sounds like you've got some kind of scumware on your system like a porn dialer. I would download Ad-Aware, updated it, and scan your system with it. Update your Anti-virus as well.

You should become aware of the fact that sometime (could be May 1st) Juno and NetZero will not allow you to check mail from a POP account. You can use the webmail of both services BUT if you want to check Juno or NetZero you MUST use their software.I use access4free and they are notorious for changing the access numbers and not telling anyone. It may pay you to go to the site and see if your access numbers have changed.

Lady/Gentlemen::::::...Here with the latest update ... unchecked always dial my default and checked the never dial a connection (line one I think) and no change. I did reboot just in case but it made no difference. I still get the same window/error I had (darn the luck).I did have AdAware 5.0 installed ran it, cleaned it up and then uninstalled 5.0 and d/l'd 6.0 it turned up 196 items on it's list. Now which is "scumware" and which is not is anyones call. I really do not know, but I am surely willing to learn.Lastly (is that a word) I do have the NetZero software downloaded and it is currently installed it is just not my default ISP. As far as the access numbers go I actually have several of them listed to use and all have been good. At one time there was only one number for the city/community I am in and now it has gained several more. Two of the new numbers are on my Linux side of the machine (Mndrk 9.0/9.2/Slack 9.0) and they also work fine. The only thing I have not done yet is to remove the NetZero from the network connections area, that could be coming up very soon.

Usually it is safe to delete whatever Adaware finds..you can always make a backup of the items first. This is from the Help file in Adaware 6: · Quarantine - Creates a backup of the selected items. It's recommended to create quarantine archives (isolate and backup) prior to removing any items! If in doubt, they have their own forums: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/ Edited by James M. Fisher

James/nlinecomputers...James.. I will do/try that and see what my results are. Thanksnlinecomputers ... I have Panda anti-virus and Vcatch anti-virus installed, Panda runs a daily check up when I log onto the web, Vcatch is constant to the best of my knowledge. But since you did mention this subject (porn dialer), I have been getting buried lately with both porn and the unwanted online pharmacey sellers, got any good suggestions on what I can do to at least cut them down to almost none, if not any at all.

James....Okay, I will check that too. Deleted the NetZero install and I still got that window popping up, frustrating, just simply frustrating. Next step will be to delete all the network connections and re-install the only one I am using, just maybe....Ships::: .... USS Providence CLG-6 '65-'70 ... USS Worden DLG/CG-18 '70-'73 and USS Bainbridge CG(N)-25 '76-'81 .... ahhh... the good old days. :D

Are you refering to SPAM email or popups? If it is popup ads then most likely your system is still infected with various forms of parasite/scumware.If it is unwanted E-Mail then I'm not sure what you can do using NetZero. Last time I saw NetZero/Juno they used propritary software. They are much better ISPs out there then either of them.If you are using OE then I would recommind that you switch to Thunderbird. It has built in spam filters that can learn based on your reading habits.http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

nlinecomputers...This is all email... have never really had a problem with pop-ups. I am using both Ad-smasher and Pop-up stopper. The only time I get any pop-ups is when I go to another network like msn and get those hide in the rear pop-ups. My primary ISP is access4free, which I know is not the best but at the time I was searching for a dial-up ISP that was cheap and also where I could use Linux that was the only one I could find. NetZero and Juno did not support Linux and most of the others I tried did not support it either.

That's not true. Most any ISP that uses standard protocals will let you use Linux. There tech support guys might balk at it, but only because they are not trained for it. If you can setup Outlook Express and use IE with a standard Dial up connection you can use Linux. Screw'em. We here at the ATL can guide you through your troubles. If Bruno and the gang can't get you online nobody can. :( :w00t: B)

nlinecomputers/James.....nlinecomputers....I is just repeating what I was told by the above mentioned ISP's. At that time I knew a lot less than I know now about Linux (still don't know squat, but I am trying hard) so I kept looking until I found one. Hind sight being 20/20 I should have just gone on ahead and tried it, couldn't hurt any. I am fixing to get another ISP in the future, not sure which yet but have been searching.James.....Naval History ... U.S. Navy web site .. lots of history .. interesting too ... my first two ships are no longer around, first was sold for scrap, second was used as a target in a fleet wide war games exercise 3 or 4 years ago. The last one is in the reserve/mothball fleet. Can't very well scrap it, not with two reactors on it. Best thing about nuke power, you only refuel once every 12-15 years. :w00t: :( B)

Thanks, Dale. I visit the USN site and other naval sites regularly for pictures and the latest info. I did find a USS Bainbridge Association website (I assume you know about it); it looks like it was a nice ship.

For your SPAM email problem, might want to try one of the following free alternatives.Change to Thunderbird email client which has its own spamfiltering system built in as was mentioned earlier.Or use one of the following that will work with most any POP email client:Robin Keir's K9 Spam Filter that works with most any POP email client.

K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time.K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam.K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN.
Use Popfile (at sourceforge.net)
POPFile is an automatic mail classification tool. Once properly set up and trained, it will scan all email as it arrives and classify it based on your training. You can give it a simple job, like separating out junk e-mail, or a complicated one—like filing mail into a dozen folders. Think of it as a personal assistant for your inbox.
There are also many commercially available SPAM filtering software packages out there to choose from as well, such as Brightmail, MailWasher and many others. As far as the number of items you have found with Ad-aware, yes, you can definitely allow Ad-aware to remove anything it finds as James mentioned. However, I have found that a combination approach works best in removing spyware/malware etc. And their removal is vital to returning to normal operation on a computer, so I would also suggest getting the following.I would also suggest downloading Spybot S &D (Search & Destroy) and remove only what is checked by default! SpyBot S&D has been working on a new version and their updates are not as frequent as Ad-aware at the moment, but it is a great program and one I depend on for this type of thing. In addition, I would suggest downloading Spy Sweeper (free download of Trial version) and run this as well. Again only remove the things that it checks by default. (you can always uninstall Spy Sweeper after it is done with the initial removal run since it is only good for something like 30 days on a given computer, but it is a very good complement to Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D).Between these three you will get most of your pests and other parasites/adware/spyware/malware and all around crapware including any dialers that may have installed themselves on your computer that may be getting in the way of your normal dialer working right.Another thing that does wonders with TCP/IP settings is: WinsockXPFix.exe which is on a Shaw.ca member site. Great tool to fix TCP/IP settings on any WindowsXP computer.Hope these things help.* Moved to Browser & Email Central

LilBambi/James...LilBambi...Thanks for the tips/info.. I have been considering a browser/email change for quite some time and I did try it once to Mozilla but lost a bunch of the favorites in doing so, and switched back to IE/OE. Is there a way I can make the change and keep all the favorites since a bunch of them are vendors I use for computer parts.James...That is the "Billy B", looks a lot better in a picture than in real life, but compared to her sister ship (USS Truxtun CG(N)-35, she is as good as brand new. Truxtun was the proverbial "rust bucket".

Mozilla should by default import the IE favorites list into it's bookmarks but if it doesn't you can manually import them. In IE use the file menu Import/Export to make a bookmark.htm file. Then in Mozilla you can use manage bookmarks tool to import that file into your bookmarks. Nothing to loose.

longgone,I think you will be pleasantly surprised to find that Mozilla 1.6 (stable verison) and Firefox both import your existing Internet Explorer favorites quite nicely these days. You will notice them the very first time you open either of these browsers. There will be an IE Favorites section in the Bookmarks. I had close to 3,000 bookmarks and I don't think I lost any of them in the move.Thunderbird does an excellent job of importing your addressbook from Outlook Express. And if your folder scheme isn't too crazy (like mine is) in OE, it will do a pretty decent job of importing the mail as well. I have noticed if you have multiple identities it doesn't do as well. I didn't bother to import the existing mail since I had quite a few years of old mail in OE and didn't want to ball up Thunderbird with all that old stuff I could load anytime I wanted in OE once I had turned off checking mail in OE. (Plus I had also spent a couple months in Pegasus Mail as well before being encouraged to try Thunderbird.)I have not looked back! I use both Mozilla (default) and Firefox as browsers, except for those odd sites that only will display right in IE. I have used Thunderbird exclusively for mail since version 3.x, and it is a great program.Hope this helps.

LilBambi/inlinecomputers:....Well d/l of Mozilla 6 down, installation done, and it seems that all those favorites made the move just fine. Thank you for the help and information/assistance. One additional question regarding the e-mail. In OE I have a whole bunch of folders in the side bar and it appears as if they made the trip over fine too, but, my question now is how do I move incoming e-mail into the respective folder that I want it in. I did not see a way or means of doing that, I know that somewhere it is there, just not sure where to look for it at.

LilBambi/nlinecomputers...One last pair of questions on this though ... a web site that I visit to play some onl line games (pogo.com) has a procedure that when you go onto the web site and select the game to play, it has an icon that you click on an it will take you to that game.... well ... I click and that is the end of it ... can't get into the game to play it ... any suggestios .....Second question has to do with Ad-Aware 6.0 ... d/l'd it ... installed it (works pretty darn good too) but now when I boot up instead of going into the standard desk top that I have it goes into a more or less blank page that has a folder icon on it and in the upper left corner it says AdAware. II do not recall making any points or clicks saying that I wanted this to happen ... how do I get back to just booting into the regular desktop that I had....Lastly with the changeover to the Mozilla Browser/Mail ... the original cause for this post has gone away .... no more agravation from that unwanted OEwindow that kept popping up. That is good.

Does it say anywhere that you need IE to play these games, Dale? Unfortunately many sites do not support Netscape/Mozilla or other browsers than IE. :)
