Guest genaldar
I bought a new burner a couple of months back (over christmas break actually) and lately its gone flaky. At first it wouldn't burn cdrws right using nero incd. Then after switching to highspeed cdrws it works fine. Then about a month ago whenever I went to make a a cd to cd copy in nero it would lock up. I disabled everything I could, but it would still lock up. Eventually I got so upset I decided to move to xp and see if that helped. Well it did, at first. The last couple of days it started acting up. I was making some copies of cds and using the on the fly choice when it locked up on the second cd I tried. It locked up so bad I couldn't get nero to close properly and had to reboot windows. After the reboot it locked up on the first cd. After another reboot I disabled everything I could (including background services). It then locked up on the second cd again. I decided to live with it for now and disable on the fly copying, so now it copies the contents of the cd to the drive before it burns the cd. that worked for about 30 cds before it locked up even doing that. It hasn't locked up again, but to be honest I'm tired of it taking 5 or 6 minutes to copy a cd. I mean the main reason I bought a dvd drive is so I could do the on the fly copies.Specs:Celeron 1.4ghz oced to 1.56 (still locks up when I clock it down to 1.4)768mb pc 133 ramLiton dvd 16x (48cd read)Cendyne rebranded benq 48x16x48 cdburnerI use only 48x discs (imation currently)I'm going to try setting it down to 40x burn, thinking the dvd drive can't keep up. I'll post my results (may not be for a few days, I've got that moving to do).
Rons
I was going to suggest a slower speed - you may wish to even try a slower rate below 40x. Especially if you wish to do on the fly copying.
Gus K
Have you updated your version of Nero? The disc version is probably out of date.I haven't had the best of luck with Imation CD's.Are both your opticals on the same IDE channel? You might try reversing the slave/master config, or move the DVD to slave position with your HD.It could just be that your burner is going bad. Guest genaldar
The dvdrom is on the primary as slave and the cdrw is alone as the slave on the secondary. I've installed the new nero, it didn't help. It seems to work ok now that I've got my new power supply though, so I think it was a power issue.
Gus K
and the cdrw is alone as the slave on the secondaryMight be best to make the CD-RW the master on the secondary. The only device should always be a master.
Guest LilBambi
Well said Gus KThe first device on any IDE channel should be master.
