I am a newbee, to this new Compaq Laptop, and XP. On other machines (pre XP) I could alway change the boot up screen and take out the manufactures logo by changing a bmp with a logos. file. Anyone know if I can change this? I think I have looked everywhere for this.

I don't know if this works for WinXP or not, but I found this at:http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/compaq/faq/software.htm

Removing Compaq Splash ScreenWhen your computer is starting up, you will see a blue Compaq splash screen with several icons that fill in with color. This screen is just for looks and doesn't really serve a purpose, other than covering up the DOS screen while Windows is loading. It's pretty simple to get rid of that splash screen. The splash screen is controlled by a program called DFILTER.SYS. To stop it from loading, just REM out the line that loads it in your c:\config.sys file. From your Start Menu, choose Run. In the box type SYSEDIT and press the ENTER key. This will load the System Configuration Editor utility. Click on the "Config.sys" window to bring it to the front. Look for the line that loads DFILTER.SYS and put REM at the beginning. It should end up looking something like this:REM DEVICE=C:\Compaq\Support\dfilter.sysSave your changes and exit the program. Then shutdown and restart your computer. The Compaq splash screen should no longer appear.Return to Top of Page
If there's nothing in the config.sys, this isn't going to work... don't have a Compaq, so don't know... Hope it works! <_<

Hi Martini Lover,Every once in a while I will try to get rid of my boot up Compaq logo. (Compaq Presario 5140 that I've had since 1998) It has eluded me so far.GolfProRM's solution works on older Compaqs than mine... there are still a few...Joy's solution might work on newer ones... but my Compaq won't even let me IN to the bios without a third party program. All I can access is the cmos settings. No tweakable option for the logo there...I have tried disabling some of the Compaq specific vxd and other drivers that load on boot... but that usually leads to a failed boot, so I have to boot with a floppy and then re-enable them.My guess is that the logo is loading from Compaq's proprietary hidden "recovery' partition... but that is just a guess. On my system... the logo doesn't hide any valuable info from the boot menu... it just occupies the screen during the POST (power on self test). So it is just inconvenient and irritating... not detrimental.Let me know if you find a solution, ok? I'll reciprocate.

Thanks for all the help, got email said it was simple, and it was. C:\windows\compaq is a bmp. Just change it to what you want and reboot. Cool and easy. Thanks again.
