HP Compaq 6200 Pro SFF and SSD drives

Hi all. I was reviewing the specifications documentation for the HP Compaq 6200 Pro SFF (link below) and specifically I was looking at the SSD options. It shows that it supports 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB HP SSD's. What I'm wondering is if there's something about the hardware that would keep it from being able to use a SSD larger than 120GB? Any ideas?

If I had to guess, I would bet that it could hold any sized ssd as they all are a standard size. The majority of SSD drives are all 2.5 inches which are the same size as laptop harddrives.

The only thing I see is this mention from the spec page:

NOTE: Use of HP System Software Recovery Disks (SSRD) is not supported on 128GB SSD models due to minimum image size requirements (>=140GB) for the SSRD.

This 500gb SSD is supported on the 6200 Pro: http://www.crucial.c...tower/CT6831908

So basically, there might be a limitation on HP's software but nothing hardware related.

Hello,

It is probably just a matter of which capacity drives they qualified (tested) the computer as being compatible. From the computer's point of view, there's little difference (if any at all) between a SATA HDD and a SATA SSD.

My guess is that those are only the drives HP offered as options when buying the laptop. There is absolutely no reason you can't replace the drive with any SSD that will physically fit. (There are some 2.5" drives that are too thick for most laptops.)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I was less concerned about the physical specs of the SSD and more concerned about what HP said about the capacity of the SSD's it supported. I appreciate the information you all gave me.

Hello,

One thing I would suggest before installing a new SSD is that you flash the BIOS/UEFI firmware on the computer's motherboard to the latest version, as these can sometimes contain updates to recognize newer hardware than was available when the computer was being designed. Also, make sure you have the latest firmware for whatever SSD you end up downloaded and ready to install when it arrives, too, for the same reasons.
