External, Mobile HD Best Brands?

I want a 1 TB external mobile HD to make a system image.

Are there some that are not good? I have WD and Toshiba. I have not experienced trouble.

Thanks,

Jerry

securitybreach

If so, then most drives would be fine although I would look for one that is either an ssd or runs at 7200rpm, just so they are faster.

I own 6 WD portable external hard drives. I think that's what you meant. Two of the six are 1TB in size.

And another model

oops, it says out of stock.

If you live near a Target, call and see if they have any (it is only available in stores)

If you can't find those, here is the latest model

I don't own any of this model so I can't post on reliability.

Are all external HD small and easily carries? I have one that is too large to do that, and I thought mobile was almost shirt pocket size.

I also have a couple that are 3in x 5in x 5/8 inch. One that size is what I want.

Thanks,

Jerry

I'm assuming there are no problems using WD Passport with linux or with software other than included WD? I did notice it says backup with included WD software.

I have had no problem copying files from a Linux machine to the drive nor using Lucky Backup with it. I just ignore the WD software.

Hello,

I have had good luck with Hitachi, LaCie (owned by Seagate now), Seagate and Western Digital external hard disk drives.

I also have had good results using Hitachi, Samsung (now owned by Seagate), Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital internal hard disk drives inside external drive enclosures. I like Oyen Digital's enclosures because they have multiple interfaces on them (USB and eSATA or FireWIre) which is convenient when working with different computers.

I have several of the WD 2.5 inch drives. I re-formated the last one as ext4 after having problems backing up some files. Something about some file names did not work with standard Windows format when using Lucky Backup. I can't remember if some file names were too long or had duplicate names in upper and lower case, or both.

I recently (mentioned around here somewhere) resolve a friend's mom's backup issues (she wasn't doing them at all) by suggesting that the son get her one of those WDs that Liz mentions above. It's a wonderful little USB hdd. I always stick with WD, if I can. I've only had one WD drive fail on me in all the years I've been using them... my 10,000RPM Velociraptor that was in ericsbane06. It failed because I used it to death. The thing had upteen bazillion hours on it. Can't complain about that one failing.

Alternatively, I've experienced (or witnessed in client systems) numerous failures of Seagate drives. I stay away from them at all costs. ;)
