I knew I was gonna have nvidia problems, always do with slackware, but I never ever had slackware problems with soundcardsI did run alsaconfit only comes up with Creative Labs: Unknown device 0007looks like lots have sounds problems on the Vector forum - everyone says to run alsaconf -- does not good if it can't detect the right card tho

Hi KellyI need more info on the sound . . but let us tackle the Nvidia first: Please remove all traces from the Nvidia driver first !Next if you have Vector Linux 5 series go here: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/vec...ux-5.0/various/ you will see some nvidia .tgz packages . . . they have an install script and are specially made for Vector

# installpkg xxxxxxxxxx.tgz

 BrunoPS: Please bookmark this page: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/vec...docs/index.html

As long as it is working that is indeed okay  . . . means it uses the correct driver even if it can not see what the exact model number of the card is. For Creative there are only 2 drivers, so it is either the one or the other ;) Bruno

That seems really odd to me, that a Creative chipset is not discovered properly. If you boot with a PCL cd, what does alsaconf on that find the card to be? If it's actually the same unknown, then you may have a SB card with a hardware problem. I despise weird cursors too. If changing it in KDE control center [or ??] doesn't work, then you can try what I do; search the /usr tree for the file named .../default/index.theme, has two lines in it, first is "[icon theme]", the second saying something like "inherits=cutesy" .. and you change that to "inherits=core" -- do a ctrl-alt-backspace, and when KDE comes back you have the lovely plain & sharp X pointer with no shadow. [On this Slax, it's /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme ]

Thanks for that tip! I got a normal cursor againThe soundcard is fine as Gentoo and Mandriva have both detected in the past as Soundblast Live so not sure why VectorLinux is not picking it up, but it's workingI still have the crazy font being too large in FF when it first opens - gots to do the cntrl and mouse wheel to make the fonts smallerNvidia card isn't doing 1600x1200 - highest I can get it is 1280x1024 Edited by havnblast

Maybe edit the xorg.conf file to include the 1600x1200 for the DefaultDepth you are using ( last section of the file ) Bruno

Hi KellyThe Ctrl+Alt+backspace don't do the trick anymore because X is started before the login ( we are growing old my friend . . . . and things keep changing  ) . . . you have to reboot these days to restart X completely ( or "init 3" and "startx" ) Bruno

ok the nvidia driver is locking up how do uninstall it so I can reinstall an older driver?when I try to install the older driver it complains about the kernel source being 8178 so I need to rid of that totallyfor some reason my nvidia card does not like the latest drivers - same story in windows too -- guess it's time to get a new video card

yea I did that than did the install of the 7176 driver -- it complained when I try to start X that the kernel module was 8178 and wouldn't start so I just decided to reboot and the nvidia driver started up, but I'm unsure what version I actually have now

You can check the /var/log/syslog . . . the /var/log/messages . . . the /var/log/Xorg.log . . . and the dmesg output. In Drake when I do "ls /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/nvidia" I get to see "libglx.so.1.0.7174" ( and I use the 7174 driver ) but I am not sure if this is the same in Vector . . . . you could do an "updatedb" and locate "libglx.so" though and see if it comes up with a number. Bruno

[wolfden@wolfbase~]$ locate libglx.so/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.1.0.7167
so I guess the reboot did take care of it when I removed it - I guess it gets confusing cause everyone tells you that you never have to reboot linux when your updating. I don't know, I find myself rebooting plenty to get things to work in linux.

With installing the nvidia drivers or upgrading KDE a reboot is always a good thing Kelly ;)B) BrunoPS: Another command to see what driver you are using: "cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "NVIDIA X Driver" ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

I decided while I was replacing the hard drive in my PC I'd download and install VectorLinux. I was real impreseed with how well the recent Live version worked on my PC. However I'm having a few issues with the 5.1 SOHO version.I tried getting and installing the nvidia drivers as Bruno posted but it requires I run at init level 3. When I run init 3 I get an error saying somthing like the monitor cannot display this mode. I also briefly see this when booting just before X starts and I log on.I ran gslapt and did all the updates. It appeared to work real well but afterward gaim will not start? If you click the icon it just bounces around for a bit then goes away? I ran gslapt again and removed and re-installed gaim but still the same behavior. Any Idea on where to look for whats causing this?I then thought I'd get Thundirbird installed. The version Vector has is 1.07 so I decided to install the current version from Mozilla. I extracted thunderbird folder, copied it to usr/X11R6. It runs and work OK except for links to web pages. I tried changing the defaults in the Control Center - Componet Chooser but it still will not work. Any ideas?Overall I'm realy impressed with the speed and clean looks! I tried the post to fix the pointer, that worked well, thanks. One more thing, when I did the updates it also changed the K Menu icon and program menu to default KDE, any idea how to get it back to Vector?- cybrmat

Well I did some more digging and found the fix for thunderbird here: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/viewtopic...ght=thunderbird (guess I should have checked further before posting B) )

to get gaim working again start up gslapt with root priv. and find gtk+2 and highlight it than left or right click on it and choose reinstall.http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/viewtopic...&highlight=gaimI did the same mistake - you don't want to do a massive upgrade with VL cause it will break many thingshttp://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9595For nvidia - when you boot the system are you going right into the Xdisplay or do you get a text login? I have the text login so all I have to do is reboot and than I can login at the prompt and than do the nvidia install. I never have a distro auto boot to X cause I can never get X to kill either.also don't forget in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to comment out dri than add glx and change your driver "nv" to driver "nvidia"you can do this with nano or mc if your at the prompt,,, if your in X use your favorite text editor to edit it and than reboot the compter for the changes to take effect

Thanks for that link as well. I appreaiate you pointing that out, I'll know next time that maybe all the updates are not such a good thing!Onward.. I actaully do boot staight into X after lilo. I'm fairly new to Linux but have run a few distros, I guess I have been lucky in that I've not had a problem with video related stuff. The live version of Vector did not have a problem, so I looked at the lilo.conf and xorg.conf files but they appeared the same. It's interesting that after selecting Linux from the lilo menu you can see the system loading and it gets pretty far along, I'd sayd just before X loads and then the monitor goes blank except for the error. Then in 30 seconds or so, X starts and the login dialog apears.I actually have not installed the nvidia driver yet to change the xorg.conf because I can get to init 3?- cybrmat Edited by cybrmat

Well the option is to make the changes to xorg than reboot, the Xdisplay will crash and not be able to start up than you can install the nvidia driver that way. Just an idea.my methods of doing things are not by the book, but hey they accomplish the same thing in the end lol

I'll keep that idea open as an option. I'm not that great at command line stuff so If I get out of X I can get lost real quick. I'm unsure what sets the video mode after your selection in lilo and X starts. It appears that something changes before X but I'm not sure what.

Hi GuysThere is a special Nvidia .tgz package for Vector Linux . . . this makes the install of the drivers really simple.See here: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/metalab/distributi...ux-5.0/various/Depending on the version you install it with:

# installpkg nvidia-7167-2.6.13-4vl5.tgz

Or remove it again with:

# removepkg nvidia-7167-2.6.13-4vl5.tgz

oh yea, that doesn't require X to be shutdown either -- totally forgot about that. do the install than do the xorg.conf edits than reboot.
